Natural Scenery

This part of the site is dedicated specifically to natural phenomena, especially those outside the moderate-sized American cities in which I've lived since the late 1990s. I'll go back a ways on these albums, perhaps as far as 2013 (California and Yosemite trip), 2014 (Yellowstone), and 2015 (PNW trip). (In 2016, I stopped doing those as much as my discretionary income nosedived once I started grad school; I later resumed them a bit in 2022.) The first one I'll share includes scenes from the Allegheny National Forest and the Upper Allegheny Valley.

Albums linked from this page are currently hosted on Flickr, which seems to ease not only the process of captioning and describing the photos but also (for visitors) the process of opening and viewing them.

Allegheny National Forest, Headwaters, and Upper Allegheny Valley (Summer 2024)

The first album I wanted to share is from a recent trip. That one was to northwestern and north central Pennsylvania:

Travel through those parts is hilly and convoluted, almost meandering at times. My old four-banger scaled the hills without a hitch, yet on foot, my knees and calves reminded me my body wasn't exactly prepped for an Olympic appearance. During that few-day trek, there wasn't much sun except for the couple of hours I spent in Coudersport, where radiant glimmers shone on the Allegheny River, at that point little more than a stream a few miles from its headwaters. Even with grayish skies and a profusion of fog in the valleys, the views were quite striking, especially from panoramic spots like Rimrock Overlook, Boone Run Vista, and Longtoe Vista. I'd like to visit again in peak fall if I can.

At any rate, I'll get some of those vintage albums out there when I can. As for new content, that's probably it for a few months. I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Mountains and Fall Foliage in Western Maryland and along the Blue Ridge Parkway (MP 0-104)

On a 2024 trip, I had the chance to see parts of Western Maryland and the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. I don't have much to say except that those areas were just lovely. It was peak fall--or nearly peak fall--and the views were quite stunning.
